building up : Award-Winning Upgrade from Bungalow to contemporary gem
Originally a tired bungalow in a spectacular location, the goal of this award-winning project was to maximise views, enhance curb appeal, and create a light-filled, functional home. By demolishing the existing roof and adding two new floors, we elevated the bungalow into a striking three-storey residence with Bauhaus-inspired design elements. This transformation not only makes a significant statement amidst the 1930s-style architecture of the street but also demonstrates the potential of building upwards.
The new design features clean lines, expansive glazing, and stepped flat roofs that open up to breathtaking views over Brighton towards the sea. The ground floor remains largely unchanged, with a sleek contemporary staircase providing a more logical route to the garden and leading to a new first-floor living area. This space offers dual-aspect views and a balcony overlooking the garden, while the smaller second floor includes a bedroom and bathroom suite, frequently used for entertaining.
The home integrates energy-efficient features such as underfloor heating, a wood-burning stove, and a rainwater-harvesting system. Additional sustainable elements include low flush toilets, low flow rate taps and showers, and environmentally friendly paints. The result is a dream home that not only meets the client’s requirements for elegance and functionality but also compliments the existing taller streetscape as a modern and energy efficient addition to the neighbourhood.
